“The main reason for the increase of the overall number of displaced (from 1.3 million in the first quarter of 2009) is the renewed aggression in Mogadishu that displaced over a quarter of a million people since May 7th,” the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said in a declaration.
On May 7, Somali insurgent groups joined forces and launch a deadly offensive against the UN-backed transition government in Mogadishu.
It said that large portion of the displaced include women and children, “who are victims of human rights infringement committed on a daily basis in complete impunity in Somalia”.
