Samson and Delilah takes out top writer's guild honor

Warwick Thornton's highly praised film Samson and Delilah has taken out the top gong at this year's Australian Writer's Guild (AWGIE) awards.

The love story about two indigenous teenagers who live in a community outside Alice Springs wracked by fighting, substance abuse, poverty and boredom has been a worldwide hit.

On Friday evening at Doltone House in Sydney, the film was honored the Major AWGIE award for the most terrific Australian script of the year.

The film was also honored the AWGIE for Original Feature Film.

In Australia, it has amassed an imposing $2.7 million at the box office , making it one of the most commercially successful local films of recent years.
